Grocery Shopping Tips With Seniors

Do you still remember the time when your parents brought you to the grocery stores when you were young? They will put you in the cart and you were amazed by the things around you while enjoying their company. Grocery shopping may seem like a simple task for everyone, but not for our senior loved ones. So, now is the time to set your calendar and to reciprocate their love by helping them with their grocery shopping.

Here are some tips to make grocery shopping easier for our senior loved ones.

  1. Help them to make a list.

Grab a memo pad and help your senior loved ones to make a grocery list if your senior loved ones are making their own meals at home. Encourage them to create a healthy weekly meal plan that is easy to prepare such as oatmeal with berries, beans, and rice, quinoa salad, etc. Make a list of all the ingredients that they will need in every meal, and make a grocery list by section like vegetables, fruits, meat, dairy, snacks, and condiments. Also, don’t forget to list their toiletries and cleaning supplies. Making a list and planning ahead is important to make your grocery shopping much easier.

      2. Choose a familiar and comfortable grocery store for them.

Our elderly loved ones may tend to get tired easily, so choose a grocery store that is familiar with them to avoid confusion. Choose a grocery store that has wide aisles and racks that are within their reach to avoid accidents. To make sure that your senior loved ones are safe, avoid going to wet markets or area that is slippery. Also, wearing a medical alert device that has the ability to monitor their vitals is also a great idea when grocery shopping. And, if your senior loved one has mobility issues, make sure that your grocery stores have some available wheelchairs or seating area.

      3. Assist them accordingly.

Grocery shopping for seniors is a bit challenging for them and they need some assistance. So, assist them accordingly — push the cart, read some labels, help them in the checkout, pack their things and lift it for them. Also, consider bringing a shopping tote bag every time you go to the grocery stores for sustainable living.

Grocery shopping is like a family event — it is a fun activity that will bring you closer together. It is also a great exercise for our elderly loved ones.
